Holistic detective’s cases may be surprising

Lesser known than the Hitchhiker’s saga, the weird activities of the holistic detective Dirk Gently are something to read. Douglas Adams’ linguistic style and surreal situations at their best, and many times I found myself unable to stop laughing while reading Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul.
But what makes a detective “holistic”? To a potential client asking that same question, Mr. Gently explains that he “operates on the base of the fundamental interconnectedness of all things”. This also explains, in his view, why items like a new fridge or a trip to the Caribbean may end up in the bill he presents to his clients. And, as surprising as it may seem, those expenses may really prove relevant to the case, in the end… ![]()
